The easiest way is to take taxi. They are always waiting for passengers just outside of the station exit. To come directly to the University, you ask the driver "Kyoto Daigaku Nohgakubu ma-e, please". Once it works you can reach the main gate of North Campus. Otherwise You should show him a map, which you can get from this page (below). You can also use a name tag of hotels around the University to show the driver. The cost of taxi is about 2000 yen. No tipping is necessary in Japan.
If you are brave (or poor), we recommend to use the city-bus service. The bus No.17(S) or No.206, bring you from the north exit of Kyoto station to the Hyakumanben-corner. It takes 30-40 minutes and costs 220 yen. They have English voice guide to tell you where to get off.
Physics department is located at the north end of the north campus. You enter the campus from Imadegawa street, walk all the way up to the north, find a farm on the left, and find the department building on the right. There are two entrance to the north campus from the Imadegawa street (running from east to west). Enter from the one in the west which is the main gate and just front of "Nohgakubu-mae" bus-stop.
