If you are brave (or poor), we recommend to use the city-bus service. The bus No.17(S) or No.206, bring you from the north exit of Kyoto station to the Hyakumanben-corner. It takes 30-40 minutes and costs 220 yen. They have English voice guide to tell you where to get off.

and many other interesting places. It takes about 60-90 minutes for a round. You pay the fee (220 yen) when you get out.
